A Diagnosis

This is my mom. I love her. She is a very kind-hearted and giving woman. She watches my kids (for free!), is always available for advice on stain removals and home remedies, and shows her love for us in numerous ways... she is a blessing in my life. Last week my mom was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. It is something we have suspected for a while. My sister, who lives out of town, noticed it first: mom slowing down, especially her hands not moving as quickly as normal to accomplish every-day tasks. Mom and Dad tried talking to her GP, but were told they would have to wait until March 2009 to see a neurologist. My dad, being persistent, found another GP to take a look at mom.

Mom and Dad were almost giddy as they told me about their appointment with this doctor. He confirmed that mom does have Parkinson's, but he took a hold of both of her hands, looked her in the eyes and said "You have Parkinsons. But you will not die of this disease. You will be able to live a healthy life with treatment." He started her on meds right away, made an appointment for her to see a neurologist (in a few weeks - thank you very much!), and took the time to talk to her. They felt so cared for, and optimistic about the diagnosis and the plan for treatment which, although can not cure Parkinsons, can reverse many of the symptoms. Here's a link to learn more. I covet your prayers for my mom.

It's so nice to read your blog and catch the fun and joy you and Mark have with your children, family and friends.

I'm glad you've also shared the recent news about your mom's health challenge as well as the support around her. Even things that have bring a measure of loss and pain can enrich our days. That's my prayer for you all. Please send her my greetings and best wishes for many happy, love-filled years to come.
